(September 7, 2006) HVAC Tales: A Look at Dean Doty’s Revisionist History "A big theme during the agenda-less CoB Fall 2006 Faculty Meeting was the impending success of the $1,000,000+ Joseph Greene Hall HVAC project that was initiated during December of 2005. CoB Dean Harold Doty and members of his administrative team are beating the “HVAC project remains on schedule. . .” drum continuously these days, as if CoB faculty and staff have no memory whatsoever of the original schedule. The original schedule was based on a three-phase process, with phase one beginning well after Hurricane Katrina, in December of 2005, and with phase three ending by late August of 2006. That original schedule is clearly explained in the USM Press Release below, which was written by Jana Bryant (former Director of Public Relations in the CoB) and released on January 12, 2006. "
(September 8, 2006)  An Open Letter to Dr. Doty

"It has been just over thirty six months since you assumed the role of Dean of the business school (by whatever name) at the University of Southern Mississippi. In that time, you have succeeded in mismanaging the academic environment in the college, in mismanaging the finances of the college, and in creating a toxic environment in which the colleagues of the business school operate. ..."
(September 11, 2006) Quotable Doty, part 4, Underfunded Centers and Full Time Fundraisers "Soon after Frank Pickering was run out of USM, the College of Business and Economic Development (CBED) got its present “development officer”, the administrator buzzword for fundraiser, Emile Dieth. ...Just what does Dieth do for Doty? Doty answered that question during his job interview at the University of South Florida. ... Wow! So Dieth arranges meetings, plans the strategy (Isn’t Doty a strategy guy?), prepares briefings for Doty, drives the car, and coaches Doty on his delivery. Maybe Doty should just stay home! The monetary crown jewel in Doty’s fundraising as dean really doesn’t belong to him, it belongs to former Dean Bill Gunther, who raised over $6 million from donors to go toward a new business building, yet Doty is annexing that sum into his record. However, while Doty interviewed at USF, he described his proudest fundraising accomplishment as the result of asking a donor for a $2.5 million gift..."  And don't forget Dean Doty's efforts to replenish his "booze account" with "fun money" and find out "how much everybody is worth ... the structure of their assets."

(August 29, 2006) The Black Friday Memo Revisited: Were we blinded by trickery or our own prejudices? This story illustrates Doty’s insubordination and acrimony. What was the result of his childish and selfish behavior? Some would say that the CoB has suffered under the Thames Administration due to Doty’s antics. Others would say that working under Doty’s leadership is punishment enough. I think this is another instance of Doty using a public institution for personal gain and his childish reaction when his plans were threatened - had Grimes allowed CoST and ED to run a center for economic education, Susan Doty’s boondoggle would have disappeared and with it a corner of Doty’s vita building fiefdom.
(September 15, 2006) Quotable Doty, part 5, Career Services in the CoB  "...The CoB Career Services Interview Suite is another example of a vanity project that Doty can use as a talking point when on job interviews, as he did at the University of South Florida. We are left to wonder about the cost of the project, which has not been disclosed. However, the benefit must be weighed against the loss of space as well as the money spent, and the cultural damage and sense of entitlement created by Doty’s mindset cannot be overestimated. ...".
(September 18, 2006) Update HVAC Tales: A Look at Dean Doty’s Revisionist History "Problems associated with Doty’s handling of the HVAC replacement in Joseph Greene Hall continue to be uncovered. The e-mails below point out that the Career Services program in the CoB was seriously hampered during Spring of 2006. Whether the damage is permanent remains to be seen."
(September 25, 2006) Bureau of Business & Economic Research: The Untold Story An Investigative Series on the Use of the CoB for Personal Gain "... A previous Special Report indicates that Gunther is possibly doing double-duty (teaching) by teaching at both USM and the University of West Florida. When Gunther first arrived on the scene in Hattiesburg in the late 1990s as the new CBA Dean, it was no secret then that he continued to teach courses at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he was formerly employed. Now we learn that his current residence is a 6-hour roundtrip drive to/from work at USM. It’s little wonder that Doty’s new BBER does little in the way of research about the South Mississippi economy. Not only that, Gunther is not inside South Mississippi economy enough to spend the $120,368 salary (not including benefits) that Mississippi taxpayers have kindly provided to him."  See also, Quotable Doty, part 2 and  Quotable Doty, part 3

(September 26, 2006) Doty’s “Professors in Practice” Servitude "It is well-known throughout the CoB that USM Provost Jay Grimes has urged CoB Dean Harold Doty to select candidates for CoB faculty positions based largely on prior business experience. Opinions on such a policy are likely to be as varied as they are regarding tastes for foods. Doty has resisted past attempts by Grimes to enforce this hiring strategy from the Dome. One of the things many CoB faculty have come to understand is that Doty does very little in the way of decision-making that has no impact on his own “nest,” nor those of his cronies in the College. It seems to us as the case of Doty’s resistance to Grimes suggestion that the CoB seek prior business experience in its job candidates is no exception to Doty’s rule...".

(September 26, 2006) Doty’s Shameful Treatment of Dr. Lo "... USMpride.com research center seems to indicate that that Lo was the victim of the Doty regime’s malice rather than its neglect. While pieces of the puzzle are still missing, it seems that Lo (a minority female) was denied proper raises during an exceptionally productive period (research-wise) because she had disagreed with Doty in public. More than one informant recounts Doty’s harassment and unprofessional treatment (non-sexual) of Lo, leading to a shouting match between the two in a stairwell in Greene Hall. .."
(October 3, 2006)  Just How Unstreetable is CoB Dean Harold Doty? Former CBA Dean Bill Gunther occasionally remarked that he had few “streetable” faculty in the CBA.  Given Gunther’s talents at fundraising, and current CoB Dean Harold Doty’s apparent lack of proficiency in this area, we begin to wonder more and more just how “unstreetable” Doty must really be.  Stories have circulated again and again in the CoB about this or that mis-statement made by Doty in a public setting.  One has to look no further than his own job talk at the University of South Florida to see several examples of that.
